(fl. c. 1550, probably Gwalior, India)
Foundational composer of the Hindustani tradition, he was a member of the court of Mughal Emperor Akbar (ruled 1556–1605) where he introduced the dhrupad. His court title, Miyām ("master"). has been appended to Hindustani rāgas attributed to him (e.g., Miyām kī Todī). Modern Hindustani composers frequently claim some relation of discipleship.
